Days tumbled on days, I was in my overalls, didn’t comb my hair, didn’t shave much, consorted only with dogs and cats, I was living the happy life of childhood again……I was nutty as a fruitcake and happier. Sunday afternoon, then, I’d go to the woods with my dogs and sit and put out my hands palms up and accept handfuls of sun boiling over the palms” - Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

  • The mind-body-spirit connection is critical. Since people with ADHD are so sensitive, every part is affected more, and much of this stress is stored in the body, (as well as the mind and the brain).
  • You can’t think yourself out of things when the brain freezes, however, your body will give you clues.
  • BIG NEWS: You can’t always solve things through thinking, but when you heal your body, your thinking automatically begins to shift. They used to believe you had to change your thinking first, but scientific studies have proven the opposite works too.
  • The body keeps the score of all the stresses and strains. Things don’t ‘just go away’. When we listen to the body and help it heal, it does.

WHAT KIND OF THINGS ARE WE LOOKING AT?

Breathing:

To calm your whole system. Often people with ADHD forget to breathe or breathe very shallowly.

Yoga:

Is important because people with ADHD hold so much tension in the body.

Sometimes the only way to heal is through the body.

Meditation:

Is great because it allows the overloaded mind to chill. This doesn’t have to be as full-on as it sounds. Most of us meditate in the shower without even realizing it!

Exercise:

Is one of the best ways to regulate body and mind.

HOW CAN YOU PUT THESE TECHNIQUES IN PLACE?

Breathing:

  • There are some simple apps such as kardia which literally show an image rising and falling, and you breathe in time to it.
  • There are many different breathing techniques you can learn.
  • One of the first things to notice is whether you’re breathing into your abdomen, or more shallowly into your chest.
  • Explore different modalities, see what works best for you in calming your system.

Yoga:

  • There’s a trauma release yoga which works well for unlocking the stress in those with ADHD.
  • When animals in the wild are attacked, they tremor before moving on. In doing this, they release all the trauma.
  • Humans would do it too, but it’s been socialized out of us. You can see it a bit when you rock backward and forwards or shake, or your teeth chatter.
  • Yoga impacts both the body and mind. It’s so vital with ADHD, that we have an amazing resident ADHD yoga specialist here at the institute.

Meditation:

  • You can take meditation classes, and learn different techniques, or you can take a more simple approach, by simply learning to be present with yourself, and noticing how inspiration comes to you in the shower for example.
  • One of the main goals is to stop the Itty Bitty Shitty Committee of your mind sending you random negative thoughts on hyperloop.
  • Another goal is to hear the answers that lie inside and out.

Exercise:

Getting out into nature, can be extra beneficial, since nature is an excellent healer.

Do what you enjoy, that way it’s sustainable and brings the most benefit.

Next time you take a shower, notice how your mind wonders, and inspiration comes. You’ll find that when your hands are busy doing something like doodling, drawing, or even just playing with a fidget cube or a bracelet, it can help you think more clearly.

Once you’re aware of what works for you, you’ll be able to use it to your advantage.

You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.” - Franz Kafka
