When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”- Unknown
THE EFFECT ON YOU AND THE FAMILY
- The effect on you and the family will continue to be chaotic.
- Avoiding ADHD doesn’t make it go away
- There are many things you can do to lessen the impact of ADHD on your child. Understanding your child and what’s going on for them, is key.
- Children with ADHD who go ‘untreated’ simply remain unknown and misunderstood. As a consequence, they’re mistreated.
- They go on to have troubled lives, often filled with addiction, jail and health problems.
- Intervention can make the difference between a happy, fulfilled life or one of misery.
WHAT’S GOING ON ANYWAY?
Children with ADHD are born hypersensitive and aware, both emotionally and physically.
This means that any of the five physical senses can be overwhelming (sound, taste, sight, touch, etc.)
The child becomes overwhelmed by things that others take in their stride.
It also means that they may see, hear, feel, touch or taste with a greater intensity than others in a positive way, giving them ‘superpowers’ and gifts in these areas.
They’re often innovators, creatives and think outside the box.
IS THE PROBLEM REALLY LACK OF ATTENTION?
Lack of focus is only a part of the problem.
Feeling constantly overwhelmed leads to a state of fight or flight. Along with attention, poor memory, time keeping, anxiety, etc. are all issues.
It’s painful to feel alienated from others.
IS THERE ANYTHING GOOD ABOUT ADHD?
Yes! Many famous people have/had ADHD; Richard Branson, Thomas Edison, Justin Bieber, Beethoven, Van Gogh, etc.
Many of the most famous writers, musicians, inventors, innovators, world changers, have this heightened awareness flowing through them.
It’s more important to focus on your child’s strengths than his/her weaknesses.
There are better starters than me but I’m a strong finisher.” - Usain Bolt

WHY DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD BEFORE HE/SHE IS HELPED?
- In the old days, ADHD went undiagnosed, and children were punished for their behavior.
- These days ADHD is better understood, and children are offered solutions (eg. specific toys or a timer to help them, etc.)
- This doesn’t work effectively because the child needs to be understood for unique individual they are. Relationship and communication is the first step. Solutions come second.
