THE A-LIST FORMULA
Is a simple framework for making sense of ADHD.
It focuses on a unique ‘difference’ rather than ‘disorder.’
The struggle is real, but the picture is bigger.
To make it easy, The A-List Formula combines the 3 R’s, best illustrated as a tree.
Just as a tree needs certain conditions in which to blossom, so do those with ADHD
THE 3 R’s: THE TREE EXPLAINED
The 3 R’s make it easy to understand what the person with ADHD needs
REGULATE, RESTORE & RADIATE
LET’S BEGIN FROM THE ROOTS UP:
REGULATE
It’s a necessity, not a luxury, to stay grounded and chill through the day when you have ADHD
This is different for everyone. eg. exercise, dance, art, nature, etc.
How do you fill your soul? Where do you unwind?
The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with their song still in them” - Henry David Thoreau
RESTORE
RESTORE your core of its struggles.
There are 2 types of struggles:
Being overwhelmed by the physical senses and emotions:
People with ADHD are more sensitive than most to sound, touch, different foods etc. These are sensitivities you are born with.
Emotionally: When things are good, they’re really good, and when they’re bad it feels like the world is about to end
The overwhelm overloads the brain and affects focus, memory, attention, etc.
This heightened sensitivity will always be present but can be accommodated.
Struggles with society and the people in it:
The result of growing up in a hostile environment and feeling ‘less than’.
These struggles are external and can be overcome.
RADIATE
It’s important to focus on your brilliance, gifts, and talents rather than your struggles.
3 ways you RADIATE:
PASSION
Yep, raw PASSION!
There will be so many things that bring you joy, laughter, and wonder.
Sometimes your struggles are so hard it’s difficult to see past them, but you’ll always have a heightened awareness of the wonder of life. This is an incredible gift.
CONTRIBUTION
Your purpose
People with ADHD have an unusual drive and are aware that they have a special purpose (even if they can’t define it)
You may need guidance and focus to embrace your gifts and talents, and not lose your way.
Many famous people have ADHD such as Richard Branson, Ty Pennington, Justin Bieber, Leonardo Da Vinci, Beethoven, etc.
BRILLIANCE
Those with ADHD have many gifts, talents, and areas of brilliance. The ability to play music or draw without being taught. Magnificent memories. An aptitude for math, etc.
These areas of brilliance may be the same or different as their passion and purpose.
For example, a brilliant artist may want to paint as his/her life purpose, or they may prefer it as a hobby.
It’s vital you harness your brilliance rather than focusing on the struggles.
HOW TO USE THE 3 R’s
Instead of being confused by what ADHD is, when you have this framework of how the 3R’s come together, life makes sense.
TAKE ACTION NOW! GET TO KNOW YOURSELF
List 3 ways you regulate yourself and restore your soul. (eg walking in nature, listening to music, etc.)
Take 2 pieces of paper.
- On one sheet write down all the ways that you’re extra sensitive; the ways you feel more deeply than others. Include emotions or senses like sound, touch, etc.
- On the next sheet write down the other things you struggle with (regular life scenarios).
- Having clarity will help you feel more in control.
- We’re here to help you get through both sides of the struggles
Grab another piece of paper, and this time write down the things that:
- You’re passionate about
- You’re good or brilliant at
- You want to contribute and make a difference in this world
Now that you’ve completed these 3 steps, you’ll have a clearer picture of each area of your life.
Take daily action on each of the 3R’s
Never shall another child suffer alone, terrified and ostracized because of difference, only to become an adult who carries the burden of being unknown, misunderstood and lost”- Skye Baloo Carnegie
